STUDY Marijuana Use may have Little or No effect on IQ

Last summer, a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences sparked a new round of worries about the dangers of smoking pot—especially for those who start smoking at younger ages.

The study found that consistent marijuana use gradually eroded cognitive functioning and IQ, and with the legalization of recreational marijuana in Colorado and Washington, it’s made an appearance in a number of articles arguing that legalized pot poses a serious health hazard. Today, though, a new study published in the very same journal—and using the very same data set—suggests that the case against marijuana is a little less cut-and-dry.

Ole Røgeberg, a researcher at the Frisch Centre for Economic Research in Norway, analyzed the same survey results and found that the declines in cognitive abilities could be entirely attributed to socioeconomic factors. As a result, “the true effect” of marijuana use, he argues, “could be zero.”

Røgeberg is careful to note that his reinterpretation of the data doesn’t entirely discredit the original study, but he does write that its “methodology is flawed and the causal inference drawn from the results premature.”

Study Pot Smoking For Middle-Aged Men Can Actually Improve Mental Sharpness

Pot use actually appeared to improve "cognitive functioning" among the middle-aged men it examined.

Researchers looked at a whopping 8,992 men who used drugs, mainly marijuana, at age 42, and then again at age 50. They were given tests to determine their level of brain functioning. The study concluded:

A positive association was observed between ever (past or current) illicit drug use and cognitive functioning.
Reuters notes that " ... marijuana was by far the most common indulgence for the participants" of the study by Alex Dregan of King's College London.

Hell yeah, said the shaved-headed, 50-year-old creep who still has a bong and goes to raves. In your face, dad.

The study warns that heavy, long-term drug use could still be bad for your smarts and memory. But a little toke now and then with the boys? Eh.
An abstract of the study concludes:

At the population level, it does not appear that current illicit drug use is associated with impaired cognitive functioning in early middle age.
THE STUDY ABSTRACT

From March to July of 2011, the authors investigated the prospective association between illicit drug use and cognitive functioning during the mid adult years. A total of 8,992 participants who were surveyed at 42 years of age in the National Child Development Study (1999–2000) were included. The authors analyzed data on 3 cognitive functioning measures (memory index, executive functioning index, and overall cognitive index) when the participants were 50 years of age (2008–2009). Illicit drug use at 42 years of age was based on self-reported current or past use of any of 12 illicit drugs. Multivariable regression analyses were performed to estimate the association between different illicit drug use measures at 42 years of age and cognitive functioning at 50 years of age. A positive association was observed between ever (past or current) illicit drug use and cognitive functioning (β = 0.62, P < 0.001), although the effect size was small. Even though there was no clear evidence against the null hypothesis, drug dependence (β = −0.27, P = 0.58) and long-term illicit drug use (β = −0.04, P = 0.87) tended to be negatively associated with cognitive functioning. At the population level, it does not appear that current illicit drug use is associated with impaired cognitive functioning in early middle age. However, the authors cannot exclude the possibility that some individuals and groups, such as those with heavier or more prolonged use, could be harmed.

VIDEO Weezer HASH PIPE with LYRICS

Lyrics of Hash Pipe

I can't help my feelings, I'll go out of my mind
These players come to get me 'cause they'd like my behind
I didn't love my business if I can't get a trick
Down on Santa Monica where tricks are for kids

Oh, come on and kick me
Oh, come on and kick me
Come on and kick me
You've got your problems
I've got my eye swipe
You've got your big G's
I've got my hash pipe

I can't help my boogies they get out of control
I know that you don't care but I want you to know
The knee-stocking flavor is a favorite treat
Of men that don't bother with the taste of a teat

Oh, come on and kick me
Oh, come on and kick me
Go on and kick me
You've got your problems
I've got my eyes wide
You've got your big G's
I've got my hash pipe
I've got my hash pipe

Oh, come on and kick me
Oh, come on and kick me
Come on and kick me
You've got your problems
I've got my eye swipe
You've got your big G's
I've got my hash pipe
I've got my hash pipe

I've got my hash pipe
I've got my hash pipe

How Long Does Marijuana Stay in Your System?

The data used to create this info-graphic is gathered from research on drug testing methods and the information presented by drug screen manufacturers. Some resources include Redwood Toxicology, Cannabis Drug Testing, California NORML. The information presented is only a guide or estimate since drug testing has many variables that can influence a positive or negative outcome.

How Long Does Marijuana Stay in your System? is the most frequently asked question that we receive at HomeHealthTesting.com. While there is no definitive answer, we have presented some guidelines. The only way to really know if you are positive is to test yourself. You can test yourself with a cheap drug test and know if you are positive. Buy a THC urine drug test

How long does THC stay in your system?
The most common drug tests used are urine, saliva and hair. Each test has a different detection time which is important to know. The urine drug test is the most commonly used because it is cheap and has a longer detection time than a saliva test. There are several very important factors that can influence how long THC will be present in your urine:
  • Weight
  • Body Fat
  • Amount Used
  • Frequency of Use
Since these factors will vary greatly for each individual, there are no definitive guidelines to tell you how long you can test positive for THC.
On a Urine Drug Test, THC will appear as a positive within 2-5 hours of use. How long it will still show on a urine drug test is estimated based on frequency of use, but does not take into account the weight and body fat of the marijuana user:
  • One Time User may show positive for 1-6 days
  • Moderate User may show positive for 7-13 days
  • Frequent User may show positive for 15 or more days
  • Heavy User may show positive for 30 or more days
  • Some Heavy Pot Smokers have reported being positive 45-90 days after quitting
On a Saliva Drug Test, THC will test positive within one hour of use, but may only show positive for about 12 hours after last use.
On a Hair Drug Test, THC will show up about 7 days after use and most hair drug tests will test for a 90 day period. However, THC does not always bind to the hair follicle which makes it not always considered an accurate testing method for marijuana use.
The most reliable way to know if you are testing positive for marijuana use is to drug test yourself.
